Dmitri Plavinsky

1937–2012

"IT IS GENERALLY BELIEVED THAT A PAINTER REVEALS HIMSELF IN HIS ART. ACTUALLY, IT’S THE OPPOSITE — A PAINTER ENCRYPTS HIMSELF WITH A HIEROGLYPHIC SYSTEM. NOT EVERYONE IS GIVEN TO INTERPRET THIS PAINTER'S ‘SELF’, AND THE LATTER SYMBOL CANNOT BE INTERPRETED AT ALL."

Dmitri Plavinsky was a painter who called his art style "structural symbolism" and believed that the power of art is not in getting to know the world or in the reflection of the latter, but in creation of unique spiritual landscapes. Starting from the late 1950s, the artist participated in the most important nonconformist exhibitions, from 1991 to 2004 he lived and worked in New York. A plenty of American museums acquire Plavinsky’s works, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Arts. The artists aerworks are in collections of the Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin Museum, the Russian Museum in Saint-Petersburg, in museums and private collections in Russia, Europe and the United States.
