Leonid Purygin

1951–1995

"A CROCODILE WAS EATING MY FEET. MY HEAD WAS BEING CHEWED ON BY A GIRAFFE. WHEN THEY FINISHED EATING ME, AND THEIR MUZZLES TOUCHED, I UNDERSTOOD THAT I HAD BEEN EATEN. IT’S A PRETTY UNPLEASANT FEELING WHEN YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAD BEEN EATEN."

Leonid Purygin was an artist who worked in a variety of techniques and genres: traditional oil painting, wooden and bronze sculpture, and works using mixed media. His major works are triptychs which are often compared with Hieronymus Bosch’s paintings and with other masters of Northern Renaissance. His pictures frequently depict luminous Space with numerous phantasmagoric images of people and animals. Purygin is classified as a representative of the Art Brut movement, specifically of "Naive Art", which incorporates personal mythology.

The artist's works are in the Tretyakov Gallery and in personal collections in Russia, the United States and Europe.
