Lev Kropivnitsky

1922–1994

"THE ARRAY OF ISSUES IN MY ART IS REFLECTION ON OUTER SPACE — UNREVEALED, HIDDEN FORCES, ACTIONS, ACCOMPLISHMENTS; A PERSON’S PLACE IN THESE ISSUES — A PLACE OF EACH OF US; UNDISCOVERED LIAISONS WITH THE UNIVERSE, BEYOND OUR UNDERSTANDING OF TIME AND SPACE. A MYSTERY OF THE UNITY OF THE WORLDS MECHANISM, WHERE EVERYTHING IS UNANIMOUS AND REFLECTED ON EVERYTHING."

Lev Kropivnitsky was an artist, sculptor, graphic artist, poet and screenwriter. He developed the direction of the Abstract Expressionism. The artist took part in the Great Patriotic War, but in 1946 was arrested on charge of belonging to an "anti-Soviet terrorist organization" and was sentenced to 10 years of camps. After releasing, in the mid-1950s he dedicated himself to the abstract painting. Worked as an art director of museum expositions and as a designer of exhibitions. From the 50s he comes to the mythological expressionism and surrealism. Kropivnitsky’s works are in collections of the Tretyakov Gallery, the New Museum in Saint-Petersburg and others.
