Nikolai Vechtomov

1923–2007

"AN INTERNAL STATE IS UNIQUE. MY WORKS ARE CONNECTED NOT ONLY WITH MY OWN STATE, BUT ALSO WITH SOCIAL CATACLYSM. TYPHOON, FOR EXAMPLE OR EPICISM OF LEGENDS. I HAVE A SOPHISTICATED ASSOCIATIVE ARRAY. MY GUT TELLS ME."

Nikolai Vechtomov was one of the leaders of the unofficial art movement of the 1950s–1960s. Vechtomov took part in the Great Patriotic War and afterwards entered the Moscow Art College. From the mid-1950s he was actively involved in the underground art movement and became a member of the Lianozovo group. The artist worked in the spirit of Neo Abstractionism. There are unreal, phantasmagoric worlds in his canvases, where the color is vibrating, pulsating. The paintings of Nikolai Vechtomov are in the collections of the Tretyakov Gallery, museums and private collections in Russia, Europe and the US.
