Vladimir Pyatnitskiy

1938-1978

Starting from the late 1950-s, Vladimir Pyatnitskiy was a part of the Moscow Unofficial Art Movement, from the 60-s the artist participated in the “apartment” exhibitions (kvartirniki) and in other projects of nonconformist artists, including the renowned “Bulldozer Exhibition”. Vladimir (along with Natalia Dobrokhotova-Maikova) is an author of the famous book of the grotesque literature-historic anecdotes called “Funny Guys”. In his art, Vladimir Pyatnitskiy combines everyday life motives with metaphysical and phantasmagoric images. Therefore, the works feature inhabitants of inconspicuous interior spaces of the Soviet apartments, city outskirts and close communal apartments that ascend in overarching senses of the Hieronymus Bosch scale.
