Ilya Kabakov

born 1933

"A TOTAL INSTALLATION IS NOT BEING ROLLED BACK, BUT EMBODIES THE FIGURE OF A PROGRESSIVE CAPTURE, BEING A SORT OF EPIDEMIC WITHOUT BORDERS AND A FORM. A POWER OF A TOTAL INSTALLATION NOT IN ITS SOCIAL, BUT IN A PERSONAL ACTION. EACH PERSON HAS AND WILL HAVE A COMPLETELY UNSOCIALIZED, INDIVIDUAL PAST."

Ilya Kabakov is a painter, experimenting with various forms of abstractionism. In the 1960s, he was an active participant of the dissident artistic expositions in the Soviet Union and abroad. Since 1989 Kabakov has been living and working away from Russia. The artist developed the concept of the "total installation". His works integrate different kinds of art, and a viewer literally could enter the world of the artist, see it from inside, feel it and become a part of it. Ilya Kabakov’s works are in permanent connections in the Tretyakov Gallery, Hermitage, the Russian Museum and other foreign and Russian museums.
