Michael Kulakov was a painter and illustrator, representative of the unofficial art movement. Starting from the mid-1950s, the artist participated in plenty of apartment exhibitions, working among Moscow and Leningrad nonconformists.

Kulakov painted in a genre of abstract expressionism. The main topic of the artist's style was an integration of color, form, sound, space and action. From the 1970s, Kulakov's works were displayed at exhibitions in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, England and France. In 1976 the artist moved from the Soviet Union to Italy. In 1984 Mikhail Kulakov became an honored member of the Academy of Fine Arts named by Pietro Perugino.
