Mihail Chemiakin

born 1943

"MY YOUTH PASSED AT A DIFFERENT TIME. WE CONSIDERED NATURAL TO LIVE IN POVERTY, TAKING UP PAINTING AT NIGHTS, BUT LABORING FOR THE SOVIET GOVERNMENT AT A DAYTIME, IN ORDER NOT TO BE DRIVEN TO THE «101ST KILOMETRE» FOR THE SOCIAL PARASITISM. I JUST PAINTED AND TRIED TO SEE THE WORLD WITH MY OWN EYES. BUT IT ALREADY WAS CONSIDERED AS A CRIME. THEY PUT TOGETHER A DOSSIER ON YOU, AND ANY LIKE YOU HAD TO STAY IN A MADHOUSE OR IN A GULAG. SEVERAL TIMES THE PERSONAL SEARCHERS TOOK PLACE, THEN I WAS TAKEN TO AN INSANE ASYLUM…’’

Mihail Chemiakin was an artist and sculptor. The major part of childhood he passed in East Germany occupation, then in GDR. After numerous exhibit arrests, art works confiscation, compulsory treatment in psychiatric facilities, the Soviet Authorities forced Chemiakin out of the USSR in 1971. First, he lived in Paris, then in the United States. Michael Chemiakin launched the Institute of Philosophy and Psychology of Creativity in Hudson (USA). In 2007 he came back to France.
