Natalia Turnova

born 1957

"I CAN'T SAY THAT MY ART IS EVERYTHING FOR ME. LIFE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ART. I CAN'T SACRIFICE MY LIFE IN SAKE OF ART. RATHER, ART IS A WAY TO RUB THROUGH WHAT IS HAPPENING IN LIFE. THAT IS WHY I CAN'T WORK "BY ORDER", ON REQUESTED TOPICS. I LIVE THROUGH MY ART."

Relying on biographers, Natalia Turnova's passion for bright colors and contrasts is connected with the childhood impressions from the exotic countries: she was born in Kabul, but then her family moved to Burma. Having entered the university (department of industrial design of the Stroganov School), Natalia drew inspiration in the spirit of the postimpressionists. Starting from the late 1980-s, the artist experimented with abstract forms and texts, but then perceived her style in half-abstract portrait paintings. This genre lets the artist imagine a hero as a mass of passion conveyed through colors and a picturesque texture. From 1990-s, solo exhibits of Natalia Turnova were held in the best galleries of Moscow, as well as in the Tretyakov gallery and MMoMA. In 2006 the artist was nominated for the prize "Innovation".
