Jak Ihmalyan

1922–1978

1922–1978

"I DON’T KNOW IF IT’S POSSIBLE TO BE HAPPY, TRANSFERRING TRUTH TO PAPER, BUT I KNOW THAT IT’LL MAKE ART HAPPY. SINING AGAINST THE TRUTH, AN ARTIST LIES TO A VIEWER, BUT NOT TO HIMSELF."

Jak Ihmalyan was a painter who received his initial education in French catholic lyceum, and then got an artistic degree in the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts. In his younger years the artist joined the left-wing movement, which is why was arrested and spent several years in prisons. After serving the sentence Jak Ihmalyan left Turkey and started traveling all over the world. The artist visited Syria, Lebanon, Poland, lived and worked in China for 3 years. Starting from 1961 Ihmalyan moved to Moscow, where from the mid-1960s there were held his solo exhibitions. In his works, always based on the eastern motives, the influence of French impressionists and fauvists can be noted.

Jak Ihmalyan's art works are in permanent collections in Russia and Armenia.
