The autumn season of the Lifestyle Film Club opens with Larisa Shepitko’s Wings (1966).
The screening will be introduced by Film Club curator Sergey Sdobnov. After the film, Vsevolod Korshunov — art historian, Associate Professor at VGIK, curator at the Moscow Film School, and host of Kinopoisk’s Close-Up podcast — will join the audience for a Q&A.
Wings follows three days in the life of Nadezhda Petrukhina, a former military pilot played by Maya Bulgakova. After the war, she became the director of a vocational school, a city council deputy, and a respected public figure, yet never fully found her place in civilian life. In the sky, she felt free and needed; on the ground, that sense of purpose was lost.
The title refers not only to Nadezhda’s past, but also to the lost feeling of flight — an inner freedom she is trying to recover.
Wings was Larisa Shepitko’s second feature film. Her cinema resisted easy explanations, leaving space for the viewer’s own interpretation. Here, the heroine’s inner conflict is revealed through pauses, glances, memories, and the almost physical sense that returning to her former life is impossible.
Larisa Shepitko died at the age of 41 while working on Farewell, based on Valentin Rasputin’s novella Farewell to Matyora.

We recommend travelling to Mayakovskaya metro station. The walk to the AZ Museum will take around five minutes. After leaving the station, turn first to the right into the alley, then moving forward, at the first intersection, turn left to 2nd Tverskaya-Yamskaya street. Walk a few meters. AZ Museum will be on your right.
By car
There are paid parking spaces on either side of 2nd Tverskaya-Yamskaya street or in the nearest alleys. Parking is limited, and on weekends and public holidays, the parking lots may be full.
