Lecture

The Russian painter and graphic artist Fyodor Semyonov-Amursky studied at VHUMEMAS. He was fascinated by the French painting tradition, artists of the Paris school. “An artist should combine the wisdom of Cezanne, the emotionality of Van Gogh and the naivety of Henri Rousseau.” Semyonov-Amursky could not accept the socialist realism art movement, nor agreed with the dictated aesthetics of the Soviet government, passively staying in the Union of Artists and made his living by retouching illustrations for the Great Soviet Encyclopedia. “Do we really have no real artists who can do without a template, without demagoguery and without censorship, who live by human feelings, and not by the precepts of the communist religion?”, the artist wrote.

At the lecture, art historian Alexander Balashov will tell about the difficult life of Fyodor Semyonov-Amursky, his artworks and the influence of the French school, studying at VKhUTEMAS and much more. The meeting will be held on February 15, 2023 at 7 PM.
