Dear visitors! Note that the AZ Museum will be closed from April 1 due to the exposition change.
Anatoly Zverev finished working on a series of illustrations for a short story "Diary of a Madman" by Nikolay Gogol in 1955. This graphics only loosely could be called illustrations: drawing on the images of the favorite writer, Zverev created his own "artist’s book". As often happened with Zverev’s book graphics, "Diary of a Madman" was scattered among various collections. The AZ Museum assembled in one book all of these graphic works, taken from the collections of Dmitry Apazidis, the Tretyakov Gallery and from other private collections.
"Diary of a Madman" is the second volume of Anatoly Zverev's Gogoliada. The first one was devoted to illustrations for three stories by Gogol — "Viy", "Taras Bulba" and "The Lost Letter". Gogol always inspired Zverev to create expressive graphic series, performed, in the words of the literary critic Igor Zolotussky, "in a whirlwind of admiration and horror." Anatoly Zverev's Gogoliada continues!
